Fence & Gate Repair in San Jose, CA

Wood fences are everywhere in San Jose. Nearly every ranch house built across the valley from the 1950s on has a run of redwood or cedar good-neighbor fencing around the back yard, and many of those fences are now on their second or third set of posts. The valley's clay soil is hard on them. It holds water through the winter rains, keeping the base of each post damp, then shrinks and cracks through the long dry summer, loosening the footing. Over a few seasons posts rot at the ground line, the fence starts to lean, and gates sag until they drag on the walkway or won't latch at all. Strong winter winds during a storm can finish off a section that was already weak.

We start by checking which posts are actually sound and which have rotted or worked loose, so we replace only what needs replacing. Failed posts get pulled and reset in concrete, or braced with a steel post mender when that's the better fix. We replace broken boards and rails, refasten loose pickets with exterior-grade screws, and rehang or rebuild gates with heavier hinges, an anti-sag kit and a latch that lines up. We keep the new wood as close as possible to the existing look, clean up old concrete and debris, and leave the yard tidy.

What this covers

  • Leaning fence straightening and bracing
  • Rotted post replacement set in concrete
  • Steel post mender installation
  • Broken board, picket and rail replacement
  • Sagging gate rehanging and anti-sag kits
  • Gate hinge, latch and lock replacement
  • Wind-damaged section repair
  • Debris and old concrete haul-away
A note from around here: Back yards across Cambrian, Blossom Valley, Berryessa and Evergreen are lined with redwood fences from the 1970s through the 1990s that are now leaning on rotted posts, while hillside lots in the Almaden Valley and East Foothills put extra strain on gates and fence runs that step down a slope.

How a fence & gate repair visit usually goes

Walk the Fence

We check every post for rot and movement, look at boards, rails and gates, and agree with you on what to repair and what to leave.

Reset the Structure

Failed posts are pulled and reset in concrete or braced with steel menders, and the run is pulled back into line.

Replace and Refasten

Broken boards, rails and pickets are replaced with matching wood and fastened with corrosion-resistant hardware.

Fix the Gate and Clean Up

We rehang or rebuild the gate so it swings and latches cleanly, then haul away old wood, concrete and debris.

Timing matters with fence work here. The best seasons are spring and fall, when the ground has some moisture and is easier to dig but isn't waterlogged. In mid-summer, the clay can be almost like concrete, and in the middle of a wet winter, post holes fill with water. We also see a burst of calls after the first big winter storms, when gusty winds push over sections that were already leaning. In older neighborhoods like Willow Glen and the Rose Garden, front-yard picket fences and garden gates often need gentler repairs to preserve their look, while in newer subdivisions it's usually long runs of side-yard fencing between closely spaced homes.

What shapes the price in San Jose

Fence and gate repair cost depends on how many posts have failed, how long the damaged run is, and the materials involved. Replacing a single post and a few boards is a modest job; resetting several posts, rebuilding a gate, or working on a sloped hillside run takes more time and material. Digging out old concrete footings in the valley's hard clay can be slow, especially in late summer when the ground is baked dry. Redwood and cedar replacement boards vary in availability and size, and matching an older fence takes some care. We'll quote the job after we see it, and grouping several fence and gate repairs into one visit keeps the cost down.

Neighbors often ask

Should I repair my fence or replace it?

It depends on how much is still sound. If the boards and rails are in decent shape and only a few posts have failed, replacing those posts and straightening the run is usually the better value. If most posts are rotted, boards are cracked throughout, and the fence leans along its whole length, replacement may make more sense. We'll walk the fence with you and give you an honest assessment.

Why does my gate keep sagging?

Gates sag because of their own weight, especially wide wood gates on posts that have shifted in the clay. Hinges loosen, screws strip out and the frame racks out of square. We tighten or replace hinges, add a diagonal brace or anti-sag cable, and reset the latch post if it has moved. If the hinge post itself is loose, we reset or reinforce it so the fix lasts.

Do I need to talk to my neighbor before repairing a shared fence?

It's a good idea. In California, neighbors generally share responsibility for a boundary fence, and most people find it easier to agree on the repair plan and timing before work starts. We're happy to walk the fence with both of you, explain what's needed, and quote it so everyone knows what to expect.

Can you repair a fence on a slope?

Yes. Hillside homes in Almaden Valley, Evergreen and the East Foothills often have fences that step down or follow the grade. We set posts deep enough for the slope, keep the rails level or stepped as they were, and make sure gates on sloped ground swing clear of the walkway. If retaining walls or drainage are part of the problem, we'll tell you so the right pro can address them.

How long will a repaired fence last?

A properly reset post in concrete, with good drainage at the base, can last many years, often as long as the remaining boards. The biggest factor is keeping water from sitting against the wood, so we slope the concrete away from the post. We'll also point out sections that are close to failing so you can plan ahead rather than be surprised after a storm.
