Handyman in Santa Clara, CA

Santa Clara borders San Jose to the northwest, roughly four miles from downtown, and is one of the oldest communities in California, growing up around Mission Santa Clara de Asís, founded in 1777, and incorporated in 1852. Santa Clara University, the state's oldest university, still sits on the old mission grounds, and the neighborhood around it, known as the Old Quad, holds the city's oldest houses: Victorians, small cottages and early-1900s homes on narrow lots. Beyond that core, most of the city is postwar ranch homes and later tracts built as orchards became neighborhoods, along with a large and growing share of apartments, condos and townhomes near the tech campuses north of Highway 101. About 130,000 people live here, many of them renters, which shapes a lot of the work we do.

The city stretches from the mission and university near El Camino Real up past Highway 101 to Levi's Stadium, home of the 49ers, and California's Great America, with Lawrence Expressway, San Tomas Expressway, Homestead Road and Stevens Creek Boulevard tying it together. Central Park on Homestead Road is the city's big gathering place, and San Tomas Aquino Creek runs north toward the Bay. Santa Clara also runs its own electric utility, Silicon Valley Power, which is a useful thing to know if you're timing a fixture or thermostat project around an outage. Summers here are warm and almost rainless, winters mild and damp, and the same valley clay that moves under San Jose moves under Santa Clara too.

What Santa Clara neighbors book most

Santa Clara is right next door, so we're there constantly and can often pair a small fix with other jobs nearby the same day.

Jobs we handle a lot around Santa Clara

In Santa Clara the work splits between older homes and rentals. Around the Old Quad we see plaster and drywall cracks, sticking wood doors and windows, worn porch and gate hardware, and careful fixture swaps in houses that have been rewired at least once. In the postwar neighborhoods it's drywall patches, door adjustments, faucet and toilet repairs, and fan and light upgrades. In apartments, condos and townhomes near the tech campuses, it's TV mounting, furniture assembly, smart locks and video doorbells, shelving, and move-in and move-out repairs that have to fit HOA rules and quiet hours.

Questions we hear in Santa Clara

Do you work with landlords and renters near Santa Clara University?

Yes, and it's a big share of our Santa Clara work. Between tenants we patch and paint walls, fix doors and hardware, repair running toilets and dripping faucets, and replace worn fixtures so a unit is ready to show. For renters, we're happy to do small jobs with the landlord's okay, and we can quote the job in writing so it's easy to get approved.

My house is a 1950s ranch. What usually needs attention?

Santa Clara's postwar ranches tend to need the same list: settling cracks in drywall, interior doors that drag after decades of seasonal movement, original bathroom fixtures that leak or run, and aging fences between narrow side yards. Many also have dated light fixtures and fan boxes that weren't built for today's heavier fans. We can work through all of it in one visit, including swapping those light-duty boxes for fan-rated ones and replacing the tired bathroom fixtures and shutoff valves.

Can you mount a TV in a condo without drilling into a shared wall?

Sometimes. Many complexes allow wall mounting as long as it's anchored properly, while others restrict penetrations in shared or fire-rated walls. Check your HOA or lease rules first; if wall mounting isn't allowed, we can set up a stand or a floor-supported mount and still tidy the cables and anchor the furniture for earthquakes.

Do you work around game days at Levi's Stadium?

We do, by planning around them. Big events at the stadium and Great America can back up traffic in the north part of the city, so if your home is near there we'll try to schedule away from event times so we arrive when we say we will. If a weekday afternoon game or concert is on the calendar, a morning slot is usually the safer choice, and we'll suggest one when you book. That way the job gets done without anyone sitting in stadium traffic on Tasman Drive or Great America Parkway.
